Understanding syringe sizes and uses is a key part of safe and effective at-home diabetes management. In addition to considering insulin needle gauges and lengths, you must select the right syringe capacity (how much insulin the syringe can hold).
The most common insulin syringe capacity options are: 0.3ml (3/10cc), 0.5ml (1/2cc), and 1ml (1cc). In this guide, we’ll explain the ins and outs of each size so you can make an informed decision. If you’re not sure which capacity is right for you, talk to a qualified health care professional or give us a call.
How Insulin Is Measured
First, you must understand how insulin is measured and how those measurements relate to syringe sizes. In most cases, insulin is prescribed in “units.” The concentration of units is represented by a U followed by a number.
For example, the most common concentration, U-100, signifies that the medication contains 100 units of insulin per milliliter. A syringe’s capacity is based on how many units of a specific concentration it can hold:
- 0.3ml syringes hold up to 30 units of U-100 insulin.
- 0.5ml syringes hold up to 50 units of U-100 insulin.
- 1ml syringes hold up to 100 units of U-100 insulin.
If you use a higher concentration, such as U-200, U-300, or U-500, you should not use U-100 syringes. The risk of inaccurate dosing is far too high. That’s why most higher insulin concentrations come pre-loaded in a diabetic pen. This guide to syringe sizes and uses is based strictly on the common U-100 concentration.
Factors to Keep in Mind
First and foremost, always use the syringe size recommended by a health care professional. If you’re thinking about switching to a different capacity, check with them beforehand.
The capacity must be high enough to hold the largest possible dose of insulin you take. Taking two half doses isn’t ideal, as taking the full dose at once is quicker and more comfortable, less likely to cause injury, and more consistent in general.
Although you technically can use a larger size than required, it’s easy to accidentally draw more insulin than required. And, the markings on smaller syringes are more spaced out, allowing you to measure visually with higher precision.
When choosing syringe sizes, you may also need to consider ease of use if you have smaller or larger hands or dexterity limitations.
Choose 0.3ml Syringes for 30 Units or Less
A 0.3ml insulin syringe capacity is suitable for adults and children who never take more than 30 units of insulin at a time.
The markings have the widest spaces, which is especially important when you need extremely precise measurements. Some people prefer syringes with half-unit markings for the same reason.
Choose 0.5ml Syringes for Doses of 30- 50 Units
A 0.5ml insulin syringe is ideal for those whose doses are between 30 and 50 units.
Syringe sizes and uses may also need to be catered to individuals whose doses fluctuate throughout the day. 0.5ml syringes are versatile for doses within the range of 30-50 units, but you may also want to keep 0.3ml syringes on hand for lower doses of 30 units or below.
0.5ml syringes have closer markings than 0.3ml syringes, so extremely precise measurements may be more difficult.
Choose 1ml Syringes for Doses of 50-100 Units
A 1ml insulin syringe is suitable for doses between 50 and 100 units or for those whose doses fluctuate within that range. The markings are even closer, which can cause slight variations if you’re not extremely careful.
