This process is known as Glycation which is more common in people with type 2 diabetes because of the increased availability of glucose. This makes it more likely to attach to the walls of arteries and form the dangerous ‘fatty’ plaques that cause coronary heart disease (CHD). As fatty plaques grow they narrow arteries – reducing blood flow – and they can eventually rupture, triggering a blood clot that causes a heart attack or stroke. Evidence in this study points to MGmin-low-density lipoprotein (LDL) as a key player that leads to heart disease. The discovery provides a possible explanation for the increased risk of coronary heart disease in diabetics and could help researchers develop new anti-cholesterol treatments, the researchers suggested.
