  2. Editorial Review

Capstar (nytenpyram) is commonly given to dogs and cats upon admittance to boarding facilities, grooming salons, pet daycare, and veterinary clinics when fleas are suspected. Capstar has a high safety margin and does not need to be given with food. Adult fleas start to die about 30 minutes after oral administration to the pet. Capstar lasts approximately 36 hours, so veterinarians often use this product in an acute flea infestation (or to prevent an infestation) and institute a longer-acting flea treatment for ongoing flea control. Each tablet treats a dog over 4 weeks of age and between 2 and 25 pounds in body weight.
