  • blood sugar 105

my doctor had me do a fasting blood draw to see what my blood sugar level would be one I did the test he came back as 105 they stated that the top limit that they do not consider as being diabetic or prediabetic is one of four. One of the nurses said that 105 is not something they usually get upset over and is not something that would be looked at as high especially in a hospital. Some of it confused why they put me on medication immediately I do have PCOs but I have been feeling really lightheaded at times and feels as if I am going to pass out while taking the Metformin which they have me on 500 mg twice a day.

Is one of five really high enough to merit taking medication in your opinion especially with the side effects of being lightheaded quite often. Or is this something that comes with the medication as a normal reaction

You need to get a second opinion! I wouldn't accept a diagnosis based on a single blood sugar reading, since blood sugar readings aren't really a diagnostic tool.

There are several tests that can be done to determine if you are diabetic. Also, you should have them check your A1C level. That is more accurate.

As for the lightheadedness, I'm not sure that is listed as a side effect of Metformin. However, lightheadedness is a symptom of low blood sugar, which is a very dangerous condition, so you should make sure you monitor your blood sugar level when you feel light headed to insure you don't have low blood sugar, which might be a side effect of Metformin.

I suggest you got to a specialist, have them tell you what is up. From what you are saying, it seems like your doctor didn't explain things to you very well. If you are Diabetic or Pre-Diabetic, then you really need to do far more than just taking some pills! Learning what you need to do and how you have head off Diabetes if you don't already have it is really important. A specialist can tell you for sure if you have it and what can be done. I wouldn't take advice from people in forums on your health. See a doctor.

      Serious complication

On that BG level I woudl have never even filled the RX.
Normal fasting is between 70 and 120.
Unless your OGGT or A1C came back or even Glycogen level came back high, thats just wrong medicine.

I wodul see another doctor for a second opinion or demand an OGGt and ovrnight insulin pull and glycogen level.
Taking metformin without need or cause will cause serious complications including biliary problems.

        Hi there,

I think your levels fall in normal levels and nothing to panic about it. To my knowledge fasting blood sugar levels would be correct to determine that we are diabetic or not. You have to check up with a qualified doctor to confirm with your situation. If you still need a second opinion you can get ADA guidelines online as a matter of information on diabetes.

        Thanks

Anti-diabetic medicine used to help control blood sugar levels in people with type 2 or non-insulin-dependent diabetes. It belongs to the class of drugs known as biguanides.
